San Diego County Supervisors have approved a plan aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety in unincorporated communities. The decision includes making improvements at specific intersections to prioritize the safety of pedestrians in areas like La Presa, Spring Valley, and Fallbrook.

According to the Department of Public Works, which oversees a vast network of road infrastructure in the unincorporated region, the County has secured grants to fund these safety enhancements. These improvements are part of the broader effort to promote active and safe travel options in the area, as outlined in a plan adopted by the Board in October 2018.

The initiative to improve pedestrian safety is driven by data indicating the necessity for these upgrades. A County Report highlighted that there were 12 pedestrian-involved collisions in underserved communities between January 2015 and December 2019, underscoring the urgency of implementing safety measures at key intersections.

The planned enhancements include installing high-visibility crosswalks, curb ramps, audible and tactile pushbuttons, and pedestrian countdown signal heads to ensure accessibility and safety for pedestrians of all ages and abilities. These improvements aim to encourage walking for everyday trips, promoting public health, sustainability, and enhancing community life.

The total estimated cost for the projects is substantial, totaling $958,554 for the initial phase focused on four intersections, with construction set to commence by June 2024 and conclude by August 2024. Additionally, 17 locations across various unincorporated communities will undergo safety improvements, with an estimated project cost of $576,107, scheduled for completion by fall 2024.

The County's commitment to pedestrian safety aligns with its broader vision for a balanced transportation system that prioritizes the well-being of residents in unincorporated areas. By investing in these improvements, the County aims to create safer and more efficient roadways that cater to the diverse needs of the community.
