San Diego State lost a close game to San José State on March 20, falling 3-2 in 11 innings during a non-conference matchup at Excite Ballpark.
The loss brings the Aztecs’ record to 11-11 for the season, while the Spartans improve to 7-12. The game was tightly contested, with both teams having opportunities but struggling to capitalize until extra innings.
San Diego State took an early lead in the second inning when Dawson Santana scored after reaching base on a fielder’s choice and advancing on a groundout and two wild pitches. The Aztecs added another run in the third as Peterson hit a triple and scored on Zach Justice’s sacrifice fly. Despite these early runs, SDSU could not extend their lead further.
SDSU starter Rohan Lettow pitched seven innings, allowing one home run and five other hits while striking out six batters. He managed to escape trouble in the first inning by stranding a runner at third base and settled into a rhythm through the middle innings. However, San José State tied the game in the seventh when Jake McCoy singled and Brent Cota hit a two-run homer.
The Aztecs had several chances late in the game but left runners stranded in key moments, including opportunities in the eighth, ninth, tenth, and eleventh innings. In the bottom of the eleventh, McCoy delivered a walk-off single for San José State after Peyton Rowles led off with a hit and advanced on a sacrifice bunt.
Caden Duke earned his second win of the season for SJSU, while SDSU reliever Jake Frohn took his second loss. Peterson, Justice, and Jackson each recorded two hits for San Diego State.
Looking ahead, San Diego State is scheduled to play Connecticut at noon Pacific Time before facing San José State again at 4:30 p.m., with both games set for Excite Ballpark.
