California State Senator Brian W. Jones has criticized the state’s budget practices and recent policy changes in a series of social media posts published between May 6 and May 8, 2026.

On May 6, Jones wrote, “This Is Gavin’s Real Legacy

California is staring down $30 billion in structural deficits every single year and the state’s own analysts cannot tell you how many workers are on the payroll or what they cost. Billions in surpluses were squandered on programs that were never”.

Continuing his critique of California’s fiscal management, Jones posted on May 7: “$28 Billion. Borrowed. Gone.

Democrats have borrowed $28 billion from other state funds to cover their spending and drained $12.2 billion from the rainy day fund.

This is on top of a structural deficit projected to hit $27 billion in 2027. They did not fix the budget. They hid”.

On May 8, he commented on recent changes to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) enrollment: “SNAP enrollment is dropping after new rules: fewer loopholes, stronger work requirements, and benefits focused on those who truly need them. That’s not a crisis, it’s accountability. #FixCalifornia

Jones serves as Senate Minority Leader for the California Senate Republican Caucus and has previously held seats in both the State Assembly and State Senate (official biography). His legislative focus includes education and veteran support initiatives. Born into a military family in Austin, Texas, Jones graduated from Grossmont College before earning a business administration degree from San Diego State University. He has been married since 1992 and has three adult children.
