Brian W. Jones, a member of the California State Senate and former Senate Minority Leader, has raised concerns about California’s economic health and state budget in a series of tweets posted on May 18, 2026.

On the afternoon of May 18, Jones highlighted job losses attributed to remote work options: “200,000 Jobs. Gone.

Remote work gave Californians a choice. They could live anywhere. Tens of thousands chose anywhere but here. California’s own analysts say the state is missing 200,000 jobs because of it. When you are the most expensive state in the nation this is what” (posted at 14:45 UTC).

Later that day, Jones criticized Governor Gavin Newsom’s fiscal management: “Newsom Has No Shame.

@SenRogerNiello called it exactly what it is. Newsom compared his budget to Jerry Brown’s surplus. Newsom is leaving his successor a $20 billion unemployment debt every other state paid, a structural deficit of $10 billion a year, a wall of debt approaching” (posted at 18:50 UTC).

In another post minutes later, Jones referenced an analysis from the Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO): “We Warned You. The LAO Just Confirmed It.

Revenues are booming and California is still running a structural deficit. $20 billion in reserves drained. A wall of debt approaching $30 billion. The LAO just compared this budget to the dot-com bubble.

If it bursts the revenue hole https://t.co/MsSC7A1z9V” (posted at 18:51 UTC).

Jones’s comments reflect ongoing debates about remote work’s impact on local economies and persistent budget challenges facing California despite rising revenues.

Jones was born into a military family in Austin, Texas and has served as both Assemblymember and Senator for California after earning degrees from Grossmont College and San Diego State University. He has led public service efforts on education and veteran support while serving as Senate Minority Leader. Married since 1992 with three adult children, he continues to play an active role in legislative discussions surrounding fiscal policy and governance in California.
