Cal State Fullerton scored two runs in the ninth inning to defeat San Diego State University 3-2 in a baseball game at Goodwin Field on March 10. The loss marked the third straight for the Aztecs, who now have a record of 9-8, while the Titans improved to 7-9.
The outcome was disappointing for San Diego State after starting pitcher Bryce McKnight delivered a strong performance. McKnight allowed only four hits and no walks, striking out seven batters over six innings, which was his longest outing at the collegiate level.
San Diego State took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning with help from Zach Justice, who extended his hitting streak to nine games by driving in Jabin Trosky. Tyce Peterson also scored after reaching base on a fielder’s choice and advancing on an error. However, Cal State Fullerton responded with one run in the eighth and then rallied for two more in the ninth off reliever Jake Frohn. A fielding miscue during Hunter Meyer’s grounder allowed Andrew Kirchner to score the winning run.
The Titans used eight pitchers throughout the game, with Andrew Wright earning the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning. The Aztecs were limited to three hits overall, two of them by Justice.
San Diego State will begin Mountain West Conference play this weekend when it hosts Washington State at Tony Gwynn Stadium from March 13 to March 15.
