Carl DeMaio, a political commentator and former San Diego City Councilmember, has used his social media platform to criticize California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent actions as the governor campaigns for the presidency. In a series of posts on August 29 and 30, DeMaio accused Newsom of political maneuvering and misleading tactics.

On August 29, DeMaio posted: “CA Governor Gavin Newsom’s latest political stunts, including his corrupt redistricting scheme, seem to be paying off for him! New polls show him surging in his race for president. Learn the polling data & why it’s not all good news for Newsom — WATCH! https://t.co/TTuhwO1kpo”. Later that day, he wrote: “BREAKING: Gavin Newsom Puts False Title on Prop 50 to Deceive Voters

On August 30, DeMaio continued his criticism by referencing law enforcement deployment in California cities: “Gov. Newsom just announced that he’s deploying the CA Highway Patrol (CHP) into CA cities to deal with rising crime. But Newsom isn’t suddenly ‘Mr. Tough on Crime’ — he just wants to boost his presidential campaign! Learn all about the phony move — WATCH! https://t.co/jz6mrAqYUi”.

Gavin Newsom has served as California’s governor since 2019 and has faced both support and opposition over various policy decisions during his tenure. The deployment of state law enforcement resources into urban areas comes amid ongoing public debate over crime rates in major Californian cities. Redistricting in California is typically managed by an independent commission rather than directly by the governor; however, accusations of political influence occasionally arise during election cycles.
