Construction has started on the renovation of a 13,500 square-foot section at the Edgemoor Distinct Part Skilled Nursing Facility in Santee. The project will convert the space into a new Acute Psychiatric Unit, adding 12 acute psychiatric beds to East County.
County and state officials gathered to mark the beginning of this $28.1 million project, which is expected to be completed by May 2027. The unit will provide short-term intensive psychiatric care for people facing serious behavioral health crises around the clock.
“Having access to safe, specialized care can make a critical difference for families and individuals when behavioral symptoms become overwhelming and immediate support is needed,” said Nadia Privara Brahms, director of County Behavioral Health Services. “That’s why we’re so excited to begin work on this new acute psychiatric unit in the East County.”
The new inpatient psychiatric unit at Edgemoor will serve adults who are at risk of self-harm or are experiencing severe symptoms such as depression or psychosis that cannot be safely managed at home. Typical stays will last from several days up to two weeks.
Funding for the renovation comes mainly from the State Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program (BHCIP), which helps counties build new mental health and substance use treatment facilities. Over recent years, San Diego County has sought more than $144 million for four capital projects; three have received BHCIP grant funding. A fourth proposal aims to support development and construction of a Behavioral Health Wellness Campus in San Diego’s Midway district.
