San Diego State University sophomore Harry Takis was named the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Year, according to a May 15 announcement from the league.
The award recognizes Takis for his performance during the season and highlights his standing among collegiate golfers. The honor is voted on by head coaches from all 12 teams in the conference.
Takis is only the third underclassman to receive this award in conference history and follows last year’s winner, Justin Hastings, also from San Diego State. In addition to being named Golfer of the Year, Takis was selected for the all-conference team alongside senior teammate Tyler Kowack. “Takis has had arguably the best season in San Diego State history and enters next week’s NCAA Regionals as the fourth-ranked player in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer ratings,” according to information released Wednesday. He averaged 69.22 strokes per round over nine tournaments and set a new single-season record for SDSU.
Takis’ achievements this season include one tournament victory, two runner-up finishes, five top-5 placements, six top-10 showings, and eight top-20 finishes. He was recently chosen for July’s Arnold Palmer Cup international team and is a semifinalist for both the Ben Hogan Award and Haskins Award postseason watch list.
Kowack also earned recognition with his third consecutive selection to the all-conference team after finishing as runner-up at last week’s Mountain West Championship with a score of 16-under par. He won an event earlier in October at Marquette Intercollegiate and holds a stroke average of 72.67 this season.
San Diego State will compete as No. 7 seed at next week’s Marana Regional in Arizona from May 18-20. The top five teams there—and lowest-scoring individual not on those teams—will advance to NCAA Championships scheduled later this month.
