UC San Diego baseball third baseman J.C. Allen was named Big West Field Player of the Week on March 16 after a strong performance to open conference play.
The recognition marks Allen’s first conference weekly award and is also the first for the Tritons this season. Since joining the Big West in 2021, UC San Diego has had 16 players receive weekly honors.
Allen, a senior, helped lead the Tritons to their first series sweep of the season by winning all three games against CSUN. Over those games, he went 10-for-17 at bat with a .588 average, drove in 10 runs, scored three times, and posted a slugging percentage of 1.176. His performance included four doubles and two home runs, along with an on-base percentage of .588.
In Friday’s game, which ended in a 17-16 win for UC San Diego, Allen recorded four hits in seven at-bats with four RBI and two runs scored through two doubles and a home run. On Saturday, he went three-for-four with two RBI including another double and home run during a 6-4 victory. In Sunday’s finale, Allen finished three-for-six with four RBI and a double as UC San Diego won 12-4.
The Tritons are set to return to Triton Ballpark following ten consecutive road games. They will host UC Riverside for their Big West home opener beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
UC San Diego Athletics transitioned from NCAA Division II to Division I as part of The Big West in 2020 after earning numerous team and individual national championships over two decades in Divisions II and III. The program has produced nearly 150 individual national champions and guided more than 1,400 scholar-athletes to All-America honors.
