San Diego State University redshirt junior Jabin Trosky has been named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, according to an announcement from the College Baseball Foundation.
The Brooks Wallace Award recognizes the top shortstop in college baseball and is presented annually by the College Baseball Foundation. The award is named after former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980 and passed away from leukemia at age 27.
Trosky, who transferred to SDSU from Oregon State for his first season with the Aztecs, is among 100 shortstops selected for this year’s watch list.
Statistically, Trosky leads San Diego State in batting average (.377), on-base percentage (.421), and total hits (20). He also leads the team with multiple-hit games (seven) and ranks second in doubles (five) and stolen bases (three). He shares second place on the team in runs scored (11).
Within Mountain West conference rankings, Trosky is tied for third in hits and shares sixth place in doubles. Defensively, he has started all 13 games at shortstop, recording 12 putouts and 20 assists while participating in five double plays. His current fielding percentage stands at .970.
Larry Wallace, co-chair of the Brooks Wallace Award, stated: “Our staff is excited to get another year started looking for that special player to represent Brooks’ Award. We will dig deep to find the personal qualities as well as the physical attributes that best exemplify what we look for in the Brooks Wallace Award winner. It’s early but this list is already shaping up to be a competitive race with some big numbers from some new guys and some familiar faces on the list as well.”
San Diego State begins a three-game series against Saint Mary’s tonight at Tony Gwynn Stadium with a scheduled start time of 6 p.m. PT.
