San Diego County public offices, family resource centers, library branches, and animal shelters will be closed on March 31 in observance of a state holiday, according to a statement released by the county on Mar. 25. Essential services such as law enforcement and emergency animal control response will continue during the closure.

The temporary closure affects several public-facing facilities, but county parks, campgrounds, and neighborhood day-use parks will remain open throughout the holiday. The Department of Parks and Recreation’s reservation phone line will not be staffed during this period; however, camping reservations can still be made online. All county public health clinics are also scheduled to close on March 31.

The Board of Supervisors recently adopted a resolution urging state and federal governments to formally rename annual observances dedicated to César Chávez. In addition, the board directed the Chief Administrative Officer to take steps toward renaming César Chávez Day as Farmworkers Day through updates in administrative codes and ordinances. These changes are expected to be reviewed at an upcoming board meeting on April 21.

“The County remains committed to protecting workers and upholding labor standards that promote fairness, dignity, and accountability– values that extend far beyond the legacy of any one person. Our Week of Action, leading up to the state holiday, continues to honor the essential contributions of farmworkers and the ongoing work of service, community empowerment and labor rights,” said county officials in their announcement.

San Diego County Government supports historic preservation and community development through various boards and initiatives according to the official website. The San Diego County Administration Center is recognized as a landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places according to county records. The government delivers essential services across multiple sectors including public safety; health; human services; land use; environment; finance; general government; and community services according to its website.

Legislative leadership is provided by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors with Sarah Aghassi serving as interim chief administrative officer according to official information. The region served by San Diego County includes urban areas as well as rural communities stretching into mountain and desert regions as described by county sources. Regional airports are managed through a self-supporting aviation department within county government according to its website.

All affected offices plan to resume normal business hours on April 1.
