Applications are now being accepted for the role of Interim County Treasurer-Tax Collector in San Diego County. The move follows the retirement of Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister on August 2. The County Board of Supervisors agreed on Tuesday to begin the process of appointing someone to serve out the remainder of McAllister’s term.

The selected candidate will serve until January 4, 2027, when a newly elected official will start a four-year term as County Treasurer-Tax Collector.

According to county officials, the Interim Treasurer-Tax Collector’s responsibilities include overseeing the collection of over $9.1 billion in property taxes each year. This covers both secured properties, such as buildings, and unsecured properties like boats and racehorses. The office also manages collection of transient occupancy tax and cannabis business tax from businesses operating in unincorporated areas of the county.

On the treasury side, management includes handling an investment pool that fluctuates annually between $10.2 billion and $18.8 billion in assets. In addition, the office acts as paying agent for all 42 school districts within San Diego County.

Interested candidates can find job details and application instructions on the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors’ website. Applications must be submitted in person to ensure all forms are complete.

The first round of interviews is scheduled for September 30 during a regular Board of Supervisors meeting. If no appointment is made at that time, a second hearing will take place on October 21.

During interviews, each applicant will have three minutes to address the Board, followed by questions from supervisors. Public comment will be allowed during this session. A successful appointee must secure at least three votes from board members before being sworn in on October 21.

For more information or assistance with applications, individuals can contact the County Communications Office at communications@sdcounty.ca.gov or call 619-595-4633.
