San Diego State University won an 8-4 victory over UC Irvine on March 24 at Tony Gwynn Stadium, ending a seven-game losing streak against the Anteaters and bringing their season record to 13-13. UC Irvine’s loss marked its ninth consecutive defeat, dropping its record to 9-15.
The game was highlighted by Zane Kelly, who tied his career-high with four runs batted in. Kelly hit a two-run home run in the second inning and added a two-run double in the sixth, helping secure the Aztecs’ lead. Zach Justice also contributed with a two-run homer in the first inning.
San Diego State’s offense surged again in the sixth inning when they scored four runs on three hits and one error. Max Farrell singled and advanced around the bases before scoring on Dawson Santana’s squeeze bunt attempt that resulted in an error. Kelly then doubled down the right-field line, driving in two more runs.
SDSU used three pitchers for three innings each. Bryce McKnight earned his second win of the season after pitching scoreless middle relief, while Connor Abadie recorded a save despite allowing two late runs. Jake Frohn made his first career start for SDSU and struck out four batters over three innings.
UC Irvine used five pitchers during the game, with starter Tyler Foster taking the loss after giving up four runs on four hits over two innings. The Anteaters outhit San Diego State 12-9 but left 15 runners stranded throughout the contest.
Looking ahead, San Diego State will play a three-game Mountain West series at Grand Canyon from March 27 to March 29 before facing Arizona State on March 30 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
