San Diego State lost to No. 13 University of Southern California, 7-4, in a baseball game at Dedeaux Field on March 17. The Aztecs outhit the Trojans but left several runners on base and could not overcome a late rally by USC.
The result is significant as San Diego State was seeking another win against a nationally ranked opponent but struggled to convert scoring opportunities throughout the game.
Tyce Peterson led the Aztecs with three hits, while Zach Justice contributed two more. Despite these efforts, San Diego State stranded ten runners over the course of the game, including eight between the third and sixth innings. USC scored three runs with two outs in the eighth inning to break a tie and secure the victory. “The Trojans utilized five pitchers on the evening, with their third reliever Diego Velazquez (2-0) pocketed the win, while Adam Troy notched his seventh save of the season,” according to San Diego State’s report.
San Diego State started strong by scoring twice in its first at-bat after Jabin Trosky singled and Max Farrell walked. Both advanced on a passed ball before Peterson walked to load the bases. However, USC starter Chase Herrell limited further damage by inducing groundouts that brought home only two runs.
USC responded quickly in its half of the first inning with four runs off SDSU starter Bryce McKnight, highlighted by Kevin Takeuchi’s three-run homer and an RBI double from Augie Lopez. McKnight then settled down and kept USC scoreless for five innings while striking out four batters.
The Aztecs had multiple chances to score but were unable to capitalize until Peterson and Justice both reached base in the seventh inning and later scored on sacrifice flies from Adam Magpoc and Anthony Marnell IV. With the score tied at four entering the bottom of the eighth, USC drew consecutive walks that forced in a run before Abbrie Covarrubias singled home two more runs for a decisive lead.
Looking ahead, San Diego State will continue its road trip with games against San José State and Connecticut at Excite Ballpark in San Jose.
