San Diego State University won the Mountain West regular-season baseball championship with a 15-1 victory over the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on May 14 in Las Vegas. The win came in the opener of a three-game series at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The result gives San Diego State its third outright Mountain West regular-season title in program history, having previously accomplished this in 2002 and 2004. The Aztecs also shared a regular-season championship in 2023.
San Diego State matched its season best with 15 runs and set a new season high with six doubles during the game, bringing their record to 33-20 overall and marking their highest win total since the 2018 season. Jake Jackson led SDSU offensively by going two-for-five at bat and recording five runs batted in, including a three-run home run. Jabin Trosky contributed four hits and two RBIs, while Zane Kelly and Dawson Santana each scored three runs for the team.
Pitcher Rohan Lettow improved his record to six wins and one loss after throwing five scoreless innings with three strikeouts for San Diego State. Issac Araiza pitched the final two innings for the Aztecs.
The Aztecs took an early lead through Zach Justice’s RBI groundout before expanding their advantage with multiple scoring bursts across several innings. Notably, Jackson hit his team-leading fourteenth home run of the season as part of a nine-run effort spanning the sixth and seventh innings.
UNLV managed to avoid being shut out when Cooper Sheff doubled and later scored on Ayden Garcia’s play in the seventh inning. Parker Dillhoff was charged with the loss for UNLV after allowing five runs over just more than three innings pitched.
San Diego State is playing its final series as members of the Mountain West Conference. The second game against UNLV is scheduled for Friday, May 15.
