San Diego State defeats Washington State 14-4 in Mountain West opener

San Diego State opened its final conference schedule as members of the Mountain West with a 14-4 run-rule victory over Washington State on March 13 at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The win is significant for the Aztecs, who snapped a three-game losing streak and improved their season record to 10-8. The Cougars fell to 6-10 overall. All nine starters for San Diego State recorded at least one hit, totaling 14 hits for the night.

Five Aztec players drove in multiple runs, with Max Farrell leading the team by collecting four RBIs, including a two-run home run in the first inning. Anthony Marnell IV contributed two hits and three RBIs, while Dawson Santana, Tyce Peterson, and Zane Kelly each added two RBIs. Adam Magpoc had two hits and scored four runs.

Starting pitcher Rohan Lettow earned his third win of the season for San Diego State, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts over several innings. Relievers Aidan Russell, Chris Canavan, and Simon Lemke combined to hold Washington State scoreless over the final three frames. For Washington State, Luke Meyers took the loss after giving up eight runs (five earned) on seven hits in just under five innings.

Washington State scored twice in their first at-bat with Dustin Robinson’s double and Mason Pirello’s groundout. However, San Diego State responded quickly by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Aztecs continued to build their lead throughout the game with key contributions from several players.

The series between San Diego State and Washington State continues on Saturday, March 14.
