San Diego State lost to Washington State 7-2 on March 14 in the second game of their Mountain West baseball series at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The result evens the weekend series at one game each, with both teams now holding a conference record of 1-1. The Aztecs outhit the Cougars nine to six but left nine runners stranded and struggled with runners in scoring position, going just two for eleven.
SDSU starter Drew Talavs began strongly, retiring the first six batters and striking out five. However, trouble started in the third inning after two walks led to three runs for Washington State. The Cougars added three more runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by Matthew Priest’s two-run single and Max Hartman’s RBI groundout. WSU scored again in the seventh when Hartman singled and later came home on Priest’s double.
The Aztecs broke their scoring drought in the bottom of the seventh with four consecutive hits and two runs, but could not close the gap further as Cougar reliever Kaden Wickersham ended the threat. In the ninth inning, SDSU put two runners on base but was unable to score after strong defensive plays by Washington State.
Nick Lewis earned his first win of the season for WSU, pitching six and two-thirds innings while allowing eight hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Talavs took his second loss for SDSU after giving up six runs over four and a third innings. Jabin Trosky, Reeve Boyd, and Tyce Peterson each had two hits for San Diego State.
The teams will play again on Sunday, March 15 at 1 p.m., with live coverage available on the Mountain West Network.
