San Diego State University’s women’s lacrosse team defeated Akron 14-13 on Mar. 22 in a closely contested road game.
The victory brings the Aztecs’ record to 2-7 as they prepare to enter conference play, while Akron falls to 7-3 for the season. The match featured standout performances from Keira Doyle-Odenbach and Molly Jacobson, who both achieved career highs.
Doyle-Odenbach led San Diego State’s offense with six goals, tying her for sixth most in a single game by an Aztec. She also contributed three ground balls and one draw control. Jacobson added four goals, including two crucial scores in the final three minutes that helped secure the win for her team.
Other notable contributions came from Macie Buell with two goals, and Lilah Turley and Tatum Neach who each scored once. Defensively, Maya Tillman had her third game this season with three caused turnovers and continues to lead the Big 12 Conference in that category with an average of 1.86 per game. Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Boughton played all sixty minutes, making seven saves out of thirty shots faced.
Akron was led by Sienna Hinchcliffe who recorded five points through four goals and one assist. Goalkeeper Adrianna Califano made six saves during the contest.
The teams were tied at the end of the first period before San Diego State pulled ahead at halftime with a score of 6-5. A strong third period saw Doyle-Odenbach score four times, giving her team a three-goal cushion heading into the final quarter where they managed to hold off Akron for a narrow victory.
Looking ahead, San Diego State will begin Big 12 Conference play against No. 14 Colorado on Saturday.
