The San Diego State University men’s golf team will compete in the NCAA Marana Regional starting Monday, May 17, as part of postseason play in the Tucson, Arizona area. The Aztecs earned the No. 7 seed among 14 teams and aim to secure a spot in the NCAA Championships scheduled for late May at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
This regional marks SDSU’s 26th appearance in the last 27 tournaments. The team received an at-large bid after finishing third at the Mountain West Championship, ending a four-year streak of conference titles from 2022 to 2025. The top five teams and lowest-scoring individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the national championship event.
The Marana Regional field includes several top-50 ranked programs such as Oklahoma State (No. 5), LSU (No. 8), Arizona (No.18), Alabama (No.20), Duke (No.29), Clemson (No.33) and Arkansas State (No.44). SDSU is currently ranked No.41 according to Scoreboard powered by clippd computer ratings released on May 17.
Head coach Ryan Donovan has selected a lineup featuring sophomore Harry Takis, senior Tyler Kowack, sophomore Kai Hirayama, junior Nathan Sampson and freshman Beau Sahr; redshirt junior Dylan Oyama will serve as alternate. Takis enters regionals with notable accolades including Mountain West Golfer of the Year honors and semifinalist status for both the Ben Hogan Award and Haskins Award watch lists.
Takis holds an average of 69.22 strokes per round this season—a school record—while Kowack recently finished runner-up at the Mountain West Championship with a score of -16 under par.
Since adopting its current format in 1989, San Diego State has made bids to regionals on twenty-nine occasions—including a streak of twenty consecutive appearances from 1999 through 2018—and advanced through regionals into national championships nine times.
