San Diego State University’s men’s tennis team defeated Air Force 4-2 in its Mountain West conference opener on March 22. The win brings the Aztecs’ record to 7-9 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Falcons drop to 4-8 and 0-1.
Head Coach Gene Carswell said, “It was a good win today against a well-coached Air Force team. I’m proud of the team for rallying together to earn a hard-fought win.”
The Aztecs started strong by securing the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. Aleksi Lofman and William Kleege won their match against Jack Brown and Tyler Leaird with a score of 6-3 on the top court. Imran Daniel Hazli and Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice clinched the doubles point by defeating AJ Moore and Langdon Tingleaf, 6-4, at the second spot. On court three, Lars Johann and Brock Anderson were leading Alec Fritzinger and Matthew Staton when play was stopped after SDSU earned the necessary points.
In singles action, Johann beat Staton with scores of 6-3, 7-5. Lofman added another point for SDSU by winning over Moore, 6-4, 6-3 on court one. Hazli secured the overall victory for San Diego State after overcoming Phillip Deaton in two tiebreak sets: 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (8-6).
Looking ahead, San Diego State will travel to Nevada for matches against UNLV on Friday followed by Nevada on Sunday.
