The San Diego State softball team defeated California Baptist by a score of 8-0 in six innings on March 11 at SDSU Softball Stadium.

The win marks another strong performance for the Aztecs, who improved their season record to 15-10. The game was decided early as San Diego State built momentum with consistent hitting and solid pitching.

Ava Schaffel started for the Aztecs and faced the minimum in the first inning, aided by a caught stealing and a diving catch from Olivia Gigante. Lala Macario led off with a single but was also caught stealing. In the second inning, Ashlee Annett singled for California Baptist, but Schaffel escaped trouble with help from Julie Holcomb’s diving catch in center field. The Aztecs took the lead when Angie Yellen, Quinn Waiki, and Kaila Pollard hit three consecutive singles, with Yellen scoring on Pollard’s hit.

Schaffel retired the side in order in her final inning of work before Faith Jordan entered in relief. Jordan struck out two batters in her first frame and did not allow another Lancer to reach base for the remainder of the game. Offensively, San Diego State continued to add runs through singles by Macario, Williams, Gigante, Waiki, and others. The game ended on a walk-off error after Pollard grounded to first base.

According to team notes, most of San Diego State’s games this season have either been decided by run rule or gone into extra innings. The Aztecs now hold a 6-3 record across nine run-rule games and are 3-1 in extra-inning contests compared to an even split of 6-6 in seven-inning games.

Looking ahead, San Diego State will begin its final Mountain West season this weekend with a home series against Colorado State. Games are scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 4 p.m., and Sunday at noon. Saturday’s matchup will be broadcast on Mountain West Network.
