San Diego State University’s softball team defeated Princeton University 14-6 in a six-inning game held Sunday at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs improved their season record to 14-10, while the Tigers fell to 7-6.
Princeton scored first in the opening inning after Julia Dumais walked and later crossed home plate due to an error on a stolen base attempt. San Diego State responded quickly as Lala Macario walked and Jazmin Williams hit her sixth home run of the season, giving the Aztecs an early lead.
In the second inning, SDSU added more runs with contributions from Kaila Pollard, Kiara Cisneros, and Macario. Williams reached base on an error that allowed Pollard to score, followed by a single from Ignacio that brought in two more runs.
The Tigers narrowed the gap in the third inning when Graciela Dominguez singled and Maddie Ratcheson hit a two-run homer. However, SDSU answered with a solo home run from Yellen and a two-run shot by Jayleen Hernandez—the first of her career—extending their lead.
Princeton’s Mia Valenzuela hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to bring her team within two runs. Faith Jordan then entered as pitcher for SDSU and held Princeton scoreless for the remainder of the game, allowing only two singles over three innings.
SDSU continued to add runs throughout the fourth and fifth innings with key hits from Williams, Ignacio, Yellen, Waiki, Hernandez, and others. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Hernandez singled and later scored on a double by Macario for a walk-off win under run-rule conditions.
“San Diego State had its highest scoring game since a 14-1 win at San Jose State on April 12, 2024. The last time it scored more was a 15-5 victory at Colorado State on March 18, 2023.”
“Jazmin Williams and Olivia Gigante became the first pair of Aztec teammates since Lorena Bauer and Patrice Jackson in 2013 to each hit at least six home runs prior to the start of conference play. Bauer and Jackson wound up combining for 31 home runs that season.”
“The Aztecs hit three home runs, their most in a game at SDSU Softball Stadium since also hitting three against Northern Illinois on February 12, 2023. The last time SDSU had more at home was a five-homer game against Miami (Ohio) on March 4, 2017.”
San Diego State will finish its non-conference schedule at home against California Baptist on Wednesday night.
