The San Diego State softball team lost 2-0 to Colorado State in its Mountain West Conference opener at home on March 13. The Aztecs, now with a record of 15-11 overall and 0-1 in conference play, were unable to score against the Rams, who improved to 13-12 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain West.

This game marked the start of San Diego State’s final season competing in the Mountain West Conference. The outcome is significant as it sets the tone for their remaining conference games.

Colorado State scored both of its runs in the second inning. Madi Eslinger led off with an infield single, followed by another single from Autumn Rutherford. After a sacrifice bunt by Kaylynn English moved both runners over, Eslinger scored on a groundout back to the pitcher. Jac Smith then drove in Rutherford with a line drive that deflected off third baseman Angie Yellen’s glove. Despite several opportunities throughout the game, including seven hits and multiple runners reaching scoring position, San Diego State was unable to bring any runs across.

Faith Jordan started for SDSU and combined with Key-annah Pu’a for seven strikeouts, matching their previous season-high total. Jade Ignacio contributed two singles for the Aztecs but was unable to advance into scoring position. In key moments late in the game, Reagan Wick of Colorado State recorded important outs to preserve her ninth win of the season.

San Diego State will continue its series against Colorado State at home on Saturday at 4 p.m., with coverage available on Mountain West Network.
