San Diego State water polo defeats Fresno Pacific 16-4 in road match

The San Diego State University women’s water polo team won against Fresno Pacific University with a score of 16-4 on March 21. The game took place at Sunnyside Aquatics Center, where SDSU scored the first five goals and maintained their lead throughout the match.

This victory marks the seventh win in eight games for San Diego State, bringing their season record to 15-8. Poppy Phillips led the scoring with four goals, making it 11 goals over her last three games. Sydney Gish recorded her ninth hat trick of the year, while Julianne Stark added two goals in her second multi-goal performance this season. Other contributors included Natalia Barrot, Hannah Bell, Lucy Bullock, Sammi Byers, Megan Holcomb, Aiyana Mendoza, and Mimi Stoupas who each scored once.

Goalkeeper Mandy Lagerlof played the first half and made five saves against two goals for a .714 save percentage—her fifth game this season stopping at least 60 percent of shots faced. Lagerlof also had a steal and improved her season record to 10-4. Tiaare Ahovelo played the second half with three saves and allowed two goals.

Shannon Murphy and Phillips each provided two assists among seven Aztecs who set up scores. Claudia Valdes contributed one assist in the game and now has 178 career assists, moving closer to third place on SDSU’s all-time list held by Sarah Brady at 180 assists.

Fresno Pacific’s Sophia DeRollo led her team with two goals. Goalkeeper Evalena Filippi made eight saves but allowed sixteen goals during the match.
