San Diego State University defeated Washington State University 15-10 in a high-scoring baseball game on March 15, securing a series win at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The result is significant as it marks the Aztecs’ first weekend of Mountain West play, improving their record to 11-9 overall and 2-1 in conference games. The Cougars fell to 7-11 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain West.
The game saw San Diego State set season highs with 15 runs and 19 hits. After falling behind early, the Aztecs rallied with a six-run second inning, highlighted by Max Farrell’s first career grand slam. Anthony Marnell IV led the offense with four hits and two RBIs, including the go-ahead run in the sixth inning. Drew Rutter contributed three hits and three RBIs, while Adam Magpoc also had three hits.
Issac Araiza earned his first win of the season in relief despite allowing one run in his lone inning of work. Carson Johnson recorded his first career save by pitching the final three innings and striking out three batters. Starter Alec Belardes allowed five runs over five innings for San Diego State.
Washington State tied the game at eight after trailing by six runs but could not hold off San Diego State’s late surge. The Aztecs scored two runs in the sixth to regain the lead and added five more in the seventh inning to secure victory. Offensively, SDSU excelled with runners on third base and less than two outs, going eight-for-ten in those situations.
San Diego State will next play No. 20/25 USC at Dedeaux Field on Tuesday, March 17.
