San Diego State University’s women’s lacrosse team lost a close game to Kent State, 11-10, on March 20. The match took place in Kent, Ohio, and leaves the Aztecs with a season record of 1-7 while the Golden Flashes improve to 5-5.
The result is significant for both teams as it reflects their ongoing efforts in the current season. San Diego State started strong, leading 5-1 by the end of the first period with goals from Tate Stokesberry, Mia Maechtel, Lilah Turley, and Tatum Neach. However, Kent State narrowed the gap in the second period and eventually tied the game late in the fourth period.
Maechtel led San Diego State’s offense with three goals. Stokesberry contributed two goals and two assists along with two ground balls and four draw controls. Neach added two goals while Turley, Macie Buell, and Barrett Doan each scored once. Sophia Miller matched her career high with six draw controls.
In goal for San Diego State was their senior goalkeeper who played all 60 minutes, making five saves on 25 shots faced and allowing 11 goals. For Kent State, Zayda Crumpton scored four times while Lizzie Lundeen had three goals. Morgan Halli added two more and Haleigh Greenberg and Peyton Gellin each scored one goal. Sydney Davis played as goalkeeper for Kent State throughout the game, recording ten saves on 25 shots faced.
The decisive moment came when Greenberg scored at the buzzer after both teams were tied at ten with just over half a minute remaining.
Looking ahead, San Diego State will play Akron on Sunday at 9 a.m. Pacific Time in Akron, Ohio.
