San Diego State University’s women’s tennis team will begin its Mountain West Conference schedule this weekend, hosting Fresno State on Friday, March 13, and San Jose State on Sunday, March 15 at the Aztec Tennis Center.

The matches mark the start of an important stretch for the Aztecs as they look to defend their Mountain West regular season championship. The team is currently ranked 25th in the nation with an 8-1 record entering conference play.

San Diego State recently secured a 5-2 victory over Cal Poly at home. Their non-conference wins include victories over Point Loma, UC San Diego, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Hawaii, No. 58 Sacramento State, No. 37 San Diego, and Cal Poly. The team’s only loss came against No. 8 UCLA earlier in January. After this weekend’s matches, the Aztecs are scheduled to face another non-conference opponent, No. 32 SMU, on March 26.

Fresno State arrives with a 7-5 record after a recent loss to Princeton. Historically, San Diego State leads Fresno State in their all-time series with a record of 15-11 and has won the last three meetings between the teams. San Jose State holds a current season record of 6-3 and will open its own conference schedule at Grand Canyon before facing SDSU; the Aztecs have an all-time series advantage of 8-5 over the Spartans and have also won three straight matchups.

Last year, San Diego State captured its first outright Mountain West regular season title since 2013 by finishing with a conference record of 9-1 and an overall mark of 16-6. This season marks their final year in the Mountain West before joining the Pac-12 Conference for the start of the next academic year.

After this weekend’s home stand, SDSU will travel to Logan, Utah to play Utah State on March 20 and then visit Boise State on March 22.
