San Diego State women’s tennis defeats San Jose State 4-0 in conference match

San Diego State University’s women’s tennis team defeated San Jose State 4-0 at the Aztec Tennis Center on March 15, marking their second conference win of the season.

The victory brings the Aztecs’ overall record to 10-1 and their Mountain West Conference record to 2-0. The Spartans now stand at 6-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

San Diego State continued its strong performance in doubles, winning the doubles point for the ninth consecutive match. Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache secured a 6-1 win over Soledad Fayos Capilla and Cristina Mateos Losada on court two. Vessa Turley and Jo-Yee Chan, ranked No. 42, clinched the point with a 6-1 victory against Duru Durgun and Emma Fantousis on court one. On court three, Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul were leading when the doubles point was decided.

In singles play, the Aztecs won all completed matches in straight sets. Gloria Alogo defeated Capilla 6-1, 6-3 on court two. Vesa Gjinaj beat Camila Celis 6-2, 6-2 on court five. Teja Tirunelveli clinched the team victory with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over Tara Mihaljevic on court four.

At the time of clinching, San Diego State led on all remaining singles courts: Chan was ahead of Durgun; Clemens led Fantousis; and Varul was up against Losada.

The Aztecs will next travel to face Utah State on Friday and Boise State on Sunday.
