San Diego State University’s women’s tennis team lost to Boise State by a score of 4-2 on Mar. 23 in Boise, Idaho. The defeat marks only the second loss of the season for the Aztecs, who now hold an overall record of 11-2 and a conference record of 3-1. The Broncos improved their own records to 10-3 overall and remain undefeated at 3-0 in Mountain West play.
The match was notable for San Diego State’s continued success in doubles competition. The Aztecs secured their eleventh consecutive doubles point with victories on courts one and three. Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul won their match on court three, while Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley clinched the point with a win on court one. However, Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache were defeated on court two.
Despite taking the early lead through doubles, San Diego State was unable to maintain momentum during singles play as Boise State rallied to win four straight matches. Clemens lost her singles match in straight sets, followed by defeats for Chan and Teja Tirunelveli. The decisive point came when Martinache fell to Tereza Polakova after two closely contested sets.
Two singles matches remained unfinished when the overall outcome was decided: Alogo led her opponent Masa Viriant midway through the third set, while Vesa Gjinaj had an advantage over Carla Grignac before play was halted.
Looking ahead, San Diego State will host No. 32 SMU at Aztec Tennis Center for its final non-conference matchup on Thursday.
