Rep. Scott Peters, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 50th district since 2013, used his social media platform in mid-May to highlight support for law enforcement, advocate for ocean monitoring programs, and address a developing emergency in his community.
On May 15, Peters posted about National Police Week and his meeting with the father of a fallen officer: “Police Week is a time to support local law enforcement and honor those we’ve lost in the line of duty. Among those I met this week was Chris, the father of Officer Austin Machitar, a fallen San Diego Police Department officer who made the ultimate sacrifice one year ago. His https://t.co/9aEZeQ79Oz”.
Three days later, on May 18, Peters shared his continued advocacy for funding ocean research: “I advocate to fund @NOAA’s Sustained Ocean Observations and Monitoring program each year because the technology helps us gain critical data about our oceans, marine life, and climate that humans wouldn’t be able to obtain otherwise. Learn more about the program and @Scripps_Ocean”.
Later that same day, he responded to an ongoing crisis: “My office and I are aware of and monitoring this horrific situation and will share updates as we learn more. Right now, I’m praying for any victims and I thank our brave first responders on the scene. https://t.co/C6EEJMYxtx”.
Peters has represented California’s 50th District since succeeding Brian Bilbray in 2013. Born in Springfield, Ohio in 1958, Peters is currently 64 years old and resides in San Diego. He holds a BA from Duke University (1980) and a JD from New York University (1984).
