In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of San Diego (USD) School of Business is renewing its commitment to helping the Ahlers Center give guidance to San Diego and to its share of the global trade and commerce market, according to a press release.

Businesses in the San Diego are, unsurprisingly, suffering at the hands of the pandemic. However, university and city leadership are seeing this as an opportunity to emerge as one of the world's leading trade and commerce hubs.

“COVID-19 was a wake-up call, alerting us to the reality that nearly every aspect of our lives is connected to the world community. The food we eat, the cars we drive, the news we see and even the air we breathe is impacted in ways we took for granted until a global pandemic shocked us into acknowledging our interdependence," USD School of Business Dean Tim Keane said.

The Ahlers Center will be a key part of the effort to launch San Diego into a place of relevance on the global scale. The university will be sinking a new round of investment into the center to not only increase its reach and capabilities, but to train its students with comprehensive and robust lesson plans that will help to make USD one of the leading providers of business education. They are hoping to achieve a bolstered San Diego economy through the effort, which they hope will have a lasting impact on the city and the region.

A key focus of the Ahlers Center will be analytics, which have been at the forefront of business and analytics of late. The center will provide resources that help local businesses to make their jump into global markets to grow their business. This is already an area of strength for the center, according to Ahlers Center Executive Director Lauren Lukens.

“Beyond our multiple business analytics academic degree programs, the USD School of Business’ economics faculty have been interpreting economic trends for the San Diego business and government sectors for years," Lukens said.

Finally, the center will be building relationships with businesses and organizations from around the community to bolster their efforts, especially in businesses and industries that have been heavily impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, which has fundamentally changed several areas of the economy as well as safety procedures.
