Ahead of the one year anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision that overturned the constitutional right to an abortion, Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (CA-51) released the following statement:

“When the Dobbs decision leaked, I was so angry that my whole body was literally shaking – immediately imagining all the inevitable pain, suffering, dehumanization, and death it would cause. And in this past year, my worst nightmares have come true. Today, 20 states have banned or severely restricted abortion access and more states are attacking abortion rights in courtrooms and state legislatures. My generation now has fewer rights than our parents.

“But even with the constitutional right to abortion created under Roe v. Wade, many of my peers – especially people of color and those living in rural areas – didn’t have real access to abortion care. So we can’t just go back to Roe, we need to go forward and build a country where all reproductive health care options, including abortion, aren’t only legal, but actually affordable, accessible, and stigma-free.

“One year after the Dobbs decision, I’m still angry, but also hopeful. That’s because every time abortion rights were on the ballot last year, abortion rights won. The majority of the American people are with us and want to see abortion rights protected. So I won’t ever stop fighting for reproductive freedom and the ability for every person to build the future they choose for themselves.”
