The Southeastern Live Well Center (SELWC) in San Diego County has been recognized nationally for its outstanding design and construction. The center was awarded the Best of the Best title by Engineering News-Record (ENR), a notable engineering and construction publication, following a rigorous review process involving 800 projects across the country.
The SELWC was praised for its innovation, safety culture, and community impact by a panel comprising 100 construction industry professionals. It was initially recognized as a top project in ENR's Western Region before achieving national acclaim in the Government Category. The award ceremony took place in New York City on March 27.
Marko Medved, Director of County General Services, expressed pride in the project, saying, “Our experience with the Southeastern Live Well Center has reshaped the way we approach new building development here at the County. The community helped shape this facility from start to finish and we are so proud of the final product.”
The recognition has brought the SELWC into the spotlight, with a feature on the cover of ENR’s March 2025 national publication. The $63.5 million project was lauded for addressing the needs of a socioeconomically diverse and historically marginalized community, involving community members in every stage of its development. Medved noted, “There was a lot of initial distrust of the county in the community. We had to make personal connections and stand behind our commitments, truly integrating them into the process.”
The facility was also commended for its energy efficiency, trauma-informed design, and the integration of ample natural light through large windows and skylights. The building's welcoming aesthetic, including warm colors and public art installations, was highlighted for enhancing comfort and a sense of belonging.
A significant factor in the SELWC's success was its commitment to local engagement. The design-build team focused on hiring local contractors, achieving 14 percent of the workforce living in the community, surpassing the initial goal of 5 percent.
