Rep. Scott Peters, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 50th District, addressed several economic and legislative concerns in a series of tweets posted on April 8 and 9, 2025.

On April 8, Peters commented on the ongoing challenges facing the immigration system. "Immigration judges are consistently backlogged, causing delays in processing asylum claims and other immigration cases," he wrote. He attributed some of these challenges to significant layoffs initiated by Elon Musk, which he fears could exacerbate delays in immigration case processing.

Later that day, Peters shared his perspectives on the impact of tariffs on local and national economies. “So why does the president support tariffs? Because he is the self-labeled Tariff Man, aka the Raise Your Costs Man." He criticized former President Trump's tariff policies for damaging San Diego's economy and increasing costs for American businesses and consumers.

On April 9, Peters expressed opposition to a proposed budget by House Republicans. "Right now, House Republicans are trying to jam through their Medicaid-slashing budget that extends tax cuts primarily for the wealthy," he asserted, highlighting concerns over the potential long-term fiscal impact, stating it could significantly increase national debt.

Peters has served in Congress since 2013, succeeding Brian Bilbray. He was born in Springfield, Ohio, in 1958, and now resides in San Diego. He is an alumnus of Duke University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, and New York University, from which he holds a Juris Doctor degree.
