San Diego County recently celebrated the 2025 Live Well San Diego Public Health Champion Awards Ceremony, where 14 individuals and organizations were recognized for their contributions to the health of local residents. The event took place on April 11 during National Public Health Week, a period dedicated to highlighting public health's significance.
Kimberly Giardina, deputy chief administrative officer for the County’s Health and Human Services Agency, along with Dr. Ankita Kadakia, Interim Public Health Officer, and Elizabeth Hernandez, P.H.D., Public Health Director, initiated the ceremony. The theme of the event, "It Starts Here," emphasized the importance of environments in shaping public health. It was supported by five priority areas, including personal health, climate action, health equity, advocacy, and public health workforce strengthening.
The awards included Director’s Awards, Public Health Services Awards, and recognition within Aging and Independence Services and Medical Care Services. Sharia’s Closet received recognition for providing free clothing and hygiene products since 2013 to those in financial crisis. The Foundation for Senior Care was also honored for its transportation program aiding older adults and individuals with disabilities in rural areas.
Veronica Whitehorse was acknowledged for her cultural competence as a registered nurse serving San Diego's American Indian and Alaska Native community. Dr. Antoinette Marengo was recognized for her advocacy and service in reproductive health care for women in Southern California.
Other notable honorees included the Defense Health Agency Immunization Healthcare Division, Pacific Region Team, for its role in military immunization in several regions, and April A. Fernandez for advancing cross-border public health initiatives.
Sarah St. John was highlighted for her work in dental health equity through her AllSmiles program, while Amy Abrams was acknowledged for enhancing life for seniors with chronic conditions and cognitive impairments.
The event also recognized individuals such as Gabriela “Gaby” Beas Love, David R. Shorey, Karen Clay, and organizations like Backcountry Communities Thriving and the San Diego Military Family Collaborative for their community-focused efforts.
Sharia’s Closet and other collaborative efforts illustrate the importance of local public-private partnerships in improving public health and wellness.
