San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond delivered his annual State of the North County address on Mar. 13 at the Frontwave Arena in Oceanside. Desmond, who represents the county’s Fifth Supervisorial District, focused on recent progress in behavioral health services, education initiatives, and support for first responders and law enforcement.
The event highlighted ongoing efforts to improve opportunities for residents across North County. Desmond said, “North County is about opportunity. North County’s future isn’t something that’s going to happen to us, it’s something we’re going to build.” He also recognized several community members as “Unsung Heroes” during the gathering.
Desmond was elected to represent the Fifth District in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. The district is San Diego County’s largest geographically, covering more than 2,000 square miles from the eastern border to the coast and serving roughly 700,000 residents. It includes unincorporated areas such as Escondido, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, over 30 other communities and Census Designated Places like Bonsall and Fallbrook, as well as multiple Indian reservations.
San Diego County Government supports historic preservation and community development through various boards and initiatives, according to the official website. The San Diego County Administration Center is a landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places according to the official website. Essential services are delivered by groups focused on public safety, health and human services, land use and environment, finance and general government, and community services according to the official website.
The Board of Supervisors provides legislative leadership with Sarah Aghassi currently serving as interim chief administrative officer according to the official website. The county serves a diverse population across urban, rural, mountain, and desert regions according to the official website, while also managing regional airports through its self-supporting aviation department according to the official website.
Looking ahead after this year’s address, Desmond emphasized continued collaboration with local communities: “North County’s future isn’t something that’s going to happen to us, it’s something we’re going to build.”
