Three UC San Diego men’s basketball players were named Honorable Mention All-Big West as the conference announced its postseason awards on Mar. 10. The recognition was determined by votes from the league’s 11 head coaches ahead of the championship tournament, which begins Wednesday.
The honorees include juniors Leo Beath and Bol Dengdit, along with freshman Hudson Mayes. Beath led the Tritons in overall scoring with an average of 12.4 points per game and contributed 5.5 rebounds per game during conference play. Dengdit was the team’s top scorer against conference opponents, also averaging 12.4 points and collecting 5.4 rebounds per game; he ranked fifth in conference action for shooting percentage at 51.1%. Mayes led UC San Diego in rebounding during Big West games with an average of 6.6 per contest, scored 11.8 points per game, and was third in the conference for free throw percentage at 88.9%, while shooting 50% from the field against league rivals.
UC San Diego finished its season with a record of 22-10, marking its third consecutive year with at least twenty wins. The team allowed just 69.9 points per game, ranking second in The Big West for defensive performance.
The Tritons are set to begin their campaign in the Credit Union 1 Big West Championship as the No. 5 seed, facing No. 8 Cal Poly in the opening round on Wednesday evening at ESPN+ and local radio station 97.3 The Fan.
UC San Diego Athletics recently transitioned to NCAA Division I after two decades competing successfully in Division II, where it earned numerous team and individual national championships and maintained a high graduation rate among scholar-athletes.
