Freshman Trevor Nguyen has been named the Big West Player of the Week, according to an announcement from the conference on March 4. Nguyen earned this recognition after winning both his singles and doubles matches over the weekend.
Nguyen achieved a 2-0 record in singles, competing at No. 2 and No. 3 positions. On February 26 against Villanova, he secured a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles. He followed that with a comeback win against Pacific at No. 2 singles, finishing 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles play, Nguyen partnered with fellow freshman Abhinav Chunduru at the No. 1 position and won both matches over the weekend. The pair defeated Villanova’s top team 6-2 and overcame Pacific’s duo with a score of 6-4.
Nguyen and Chunduru also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pacific Coast Doubles tournament, progressing through a field of 128 teams. They defeated a UCLA pair in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 11-9) before overcoming the tournament’s top-seeded team in the round of sixteen (7-6(8), 1-6, 6-1).
This marks UC San Diego Tritons’ second Big West weekly award this season; Prathinav Chunduru received the first on January 21 for his performance against Sacramento State.
UC San Diego is scheduled to host Navy on March 11 at Northview Tennis.
After transitioning from NCAA Division II to Division I in The Big West Conference in 2020, UC San Diego Athletics has continued its tradition of academic and athletic achievement. Over two decades in Divisions II and III, Triton teams collected numerous national championships and individual honors while maintaining high graduation rates among scholar-athletes.
