UC San Diego baseball won a close 17-16 game against CSUN on March 13 at Hiegert Field. The Tritons, now with a record of 5-10 and 1-0 in the Big West Conference, hit five home runs to secure the victory over the Matadors, who fell to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
The game was marked by strong offensive performances from several Triton players. Gabe Camacho led the team with four hits, including two home runs, and drove in four runs. Michael Crossland contributed two RBIs and a home run, while J.C. Allen had four hits with two doubles and a home run, also driving in four runs. Anthony Potestio drew four walks and scored four times.
Steele Murdock started for UC San Diego, pitching five and one-third innings with seven strikeouts. He allowed only one run through five innings before giving up four more in the sixth. Julian Cazares earned the win after closing out the final one and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts and allowing just one unearned run.
The lead changed hands multiple times throughout the game. UC San Diego took an early lead but saw CSUN tie it up before pulling ahead again thanks to key hits from Camacho, Allen, Crossland, and Nick Costello. Both teams had big innings late in the game; however, Camacho’s two-run homer in the ninth inning proved decisive as UC San Diego held off a late rally by CSUN.
Camacho now leads the Big West Conference with eight home runs and twenty-three runs batted in this season. The Tritons used five pitchers during the contest and improved their all-time series record against CSUN to ten wins and seven losses.
UC San Diego will continue its weekend series at CSUN on Saturday at 2 p.m., with coverage available on ESPN+ and live statistics provided by UCSDTritons.com.
