UC San Diego men’s golf team is in seventh place after the first two rounds of the R.E. Lamkin Invitational, according to a March 9 update from the university.
The tournament, co-hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego, features 16 teams competing at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista. The Tritons finished Monday’s play one under par, with a three-under opening round followed by a two-over second round.
Justin Gill leads UC San Diego individually at three under par, placing him 11th overall. Other top performers for the Tritons include Davis McDowell at two under (15th), Nathan Tseng at one under (17th), Hanjie Yu at five over (59th), and Francis Catalano at seven over (69th). The University of San Diego holds the lead at 19 under par, followed by Long Beach State and host San Diego State.
This year’s field includes six Big West Conference teams: UC San Diego, Cal Poly, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara. The event has seen previous wins from San Diego State in 2025 and the University of San Diego in 2024. This marks only the third time UC San Diego has participated since moving to NCAA Division I status for the 2000-2001 season.
San Diego Country Club serves as the venue for this invitational. Established in 1897 and located in Chula Vista since 1920, it is recognized as Southern San Diego County’s only private club and was designed by architect William Watson as Southern California’s first all-grass 18-hole course.
The Tritons’ recent finishes this season include third place at both the Nick Watney Invitational and Falcon Invite, second place at Pearl at Kalauao Invite, fourth place at Pacific Invite, fifth place finishes at Lake Las Vegas Invite and Ram Masters. Top individual performances have come from McDowell, Yu, Tseng, and Gill across these events.
