UC San Diego’s women’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to four matches with a 0-0 draw against Pacific on Monday morning in Stockton, California. Goalkeeper Charlotte Wilfert recorded her third shutout of the season, making four saves during the match.
The Tritons now have a record of 1-1-3 for the season, while Pacific stands at 1-3-2 after the draw.
During the first half, UC San Diego managed only one shot on goal, which came from Andrea Guillen in the 44th minute but was saved by Pacific’s Lis van Herwijnen. Earlier in that half, Pacific had a goal disallowed due to a foul committed on a Triton defender. The Tigers outshot UC San Diego 6-1 in the opening period but placed just one attempt on target.
After halftime, Sarah McCallum of Pacific tested Wilfert again, who made her second save. The Tritons earned their first corner kick in the 55th minute and created several opportunities through set pieces in the second half. Natalie Abel delivered a ball to Chloe Yates at the top of the penalty area whose shot was blocked. Another chance came in the 64th minute when Talisa Lin’s effort was stopped by van Herwijnen.
Pacific threatened late in regulation with a strong opportunity off a corner kick and another shot that struck the crossbar less than two minutes later. In stoppage time, Pacific earned another corner but could not capitalize before time expired.
Both teams finished with four corner kicks each; all of UC San Diego’s corners occurred after halftime. This contest marked UC San Diego’s first matchup this season against an opponent from the West Coast Conference. Later this month, they are scheduled to host Washington State and San Francisco.
Defender Jenna Grider contributed significantly off the bench with 26 minutes played on defense. The match took place under hot conditions, beginning at 87 degrees and rising into the 90s during play. A hydration break was taken in the 72nd minute—the first such pause for UC San Diego this year.
Following Monday’s result, Pacific leads their Division I series against UC San Diego with one win and two draws.
UC San Diego head coach Kristin Jones commented: “I’m proud of the effort we showed today. Despite challenging conditions, we got stronger as game went on and showed a lot of determination,” said UC San Diego head coach Kristin Jones ’04. “We really bought into the halftime adjustments and created a lot of corners. It’s just a matter of converting in those opportunities.”
Next up for UC San Diego is an away game Thursday night against Colorado College—one of two upcoming matches versus Mountain West opponents in Colorado this week. The Tritons are currently unbeaten (1-0-1) against Mountain West competition so far this season.
UC San Diego Athletics recently transitioned from NCAA Division II to Division I as part of The Big West conference after years marked by success at lower levels—including multiple national championships and high graduation rates among scholar-athletes.
