The facility reported 299 available beds in this period, which is 190 above the county’s average. It served an average of 288.1 residents per day throughout the quarter.
CMS gave Villa Rancho Bernardo Care Center an overall rating of 4 out of 5, higher than the California nursing home average of 3.2.
Country Hills Post Acute|The Shores Post-Acute led with the largest nursing home capacity in San Diego County that quarter, offering 305 beds.
Villa Rancho Bernardo Care Center reported zero fines or penalties during the first quarter of 2026.
San Diego County had 67 for-profit nursing homes in total.
U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the older adult population nationwide keeps rising, while numbers among younger groups fall. Between 2020 and 2024, the number of Americans age 65 and older climbed 13% as those under 18 decreased by 1.7%. In the past hundred years, the country’s older adult population has surged from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 study found that nearly half of adults in this group—about 28 million—are expected to need long-term services and support, with projections that over a third may ultimately require nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance-information group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
