The San Diego County Fire Authority has changed its name to San Diego County Fire Protection District.
“The San Diego County Fire Protection District has been a long time coming,” District Director Herman Reddick said in a post on the San Diego County News Center website. “It is the natural progression of growth and provides the long-term stability of the organization.”
The News Center website states San Diego Fire and the San Diego Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) have been working to obtain fire protection services since 1993. The county had ended its fire services contract with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection back in the 1970s.
The fire protection district designation will ensure fire protection services will always be able to individuals within the 1.7-million-acre area served by San Diego County Fire. The organization will operate in collaboration with the county of San Diego and state of California.
