The University of San Diego said that Maritza Johnson was hired as the director of a new center led by its Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering.
"I know from experience that USD has a great culture around the humanities and liberal arts, as well as a change-making spirit," Johnson said in a university release last month.
The university said the new center does not have a name.
"I'm extremely excited to join this community, which is already primed to explore how we can responsibly use data as a tool for empowerment to create change in society," Johnson said. "I'm looking forward to seeing how we can instill that in our students and envision programs that really live up to that."
Johnson holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Columbia University and a bachelor's in computer science from USD. Johnson has also lectured at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of San Diego. The new director has also published works in the areas of data privacy and security.
