San Diego County health officials have issued a warning regarding the dangers of purchasing counterfeit Botox from unverified sources after a recent incident involving a woman who may have contracted botulism. The 43-year-old resident bought a product labeled as Botox from an unauthorized online seller and received the injection at a "Botox Party" in Mexico. Following the injection, she began experiencing symptoms consistent with botulism, such as headache, weakness, hoarse voice, and blurred vision.

According to Ankita Kadakia, M.D., County Deputy Public Health Officer, "Botulism is a rare and sometimes fatal illness. That’s why it is vital you go to the emergency department immediately if you have symptoms, so doctors can administer an antitoxin." Dr. Kadakia emphasized the importance of purchasing Botox and similar products only from accredited sources to avoid such risks.

The incident in San Diego County comes amidst a broader concern as the CDC investigates 22 cases of botulism related to counterfeit or mishandled botulinum toxin (Botox) in 11 states, including two cases in California. Half of the affected individuals required hospitalization, highlighting the severity of the issue.

Symptoms of botulism can manifest within days or weeks of exposure to the contaminated substance, with onset typically occurring around 3 days after injection, as reported by the CDC. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial in mitigating the severity and duration of the illness. Individuals who experience symptoms after receiving an injection are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
