San Diegans are invited to participate in the upcoming annual San Diego NAMI Walks and Mental Wellness Expo happening this Saturday, April 27, 2024. The event, organized by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in collaboration with the County's Health and Human Services Agency, aims to raise awareness about mental health and combat the stigma surrounding mental health topics.

Dr. Luke Bergmann, Director of County Behavioral Health Services, highlighted the significance of the event, stating, "Every year, the NAMIWalks gives us an incredible opportunity for our communities to come together and take a moment to think about our mental health and how we can support one another." He emphasized the importance of mental health care, especially as the event kicks off Mental Health Matters Month, which is observed every May.

The day will commence with a community walk around Preble Field in NTC Park at Liberty Station, starting at 8:15 a.m. Following opening remarks, attendees can explore the Mental Wellness Expo, featuring over 100 exhibitor booths offering resources for various groups, including families, children, military members, and veterans. The expo will also provide hands-on activities aimed at improving mental health, such as an affirmation potting station, stigma busting photo booth, Naloxone distribution, face painting, a children's activity booth, and Tai-Chi demonstrations.

To participate in the NAMIWalks and Mental Wellness Expo, interested individuals can register on the event website. Additionally, those facing mental health challenges or seeking support can reach out to the Access and Crisis Line at 1-888-724-7240. Further resources are available on the County BHS Resources webpage and the It's Up to Us SD website, which also includes a list of activities surrounding Mental Health Matters Month.
