The County of San Diego has initiated its annual Cool Zones program as the region braces for its first potential summer-like temperatures this week. The program, which began two decades ago, aims to provide older adults, people with disabilities, and those with health concerns free access to air-conditioned shelters during periods of extreme heat.

Running from June 1 through October 31, Cool Zone sites include the county’s 33 branch libraries, community centers, and other locations. A complete list and map of these sites can be found online. Residents can use a map feature on the website to locate nearby Cool Zones by entering their address. Alternatively, they can call 2-1-1 for assistance in finding a location or arranging free transportation if they cannot reach a site on their own.

Extreme heat poses significant risks, particularly for the elderly and children. It is advised that everyone seeks shelter in cool places when temperatures rise significantly. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses ranging from cramps and exhaustion to heatstroke—a severe condition where the body loses its ability to regulate temperature.

Signs of heatstroke or exhaustion include an extremely high body temperature (103 degrees or higher), dizziness, nausea, confusion, and headache. Anyone exhibiting these symptoms should call 9-1-1 immediately and seek cooling measures.

In addition to Cool Zone sites, the County collaborates with San Diego Gas & Electric to provide free electric fans to eligible older or disabled residents living on limited incomes. Eligibility criteria include being at least 60 years old or disabled, living on a limited income without access to air conditioning at home, and being unable to travel to a Cool Zone site.

For more information about the Cool Zone fan program or to request a fan, residents can call 2-1-1 or visit www.coolzones.org to complete an eligibility survey.
