Community members are invited to join the County and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) at the upcoming Take on Alzheimer’s free informational event. June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, which recognizes the millions of people living with Alzheimer’s and encourages everyone to learn about ways to promote brain health. Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia, affecting memory, thinking, and behavior.

The County and CDPH are bringing together clinicians and public health experts to discuss the impacts of Alzheimer’s in San Diego County, local strategies to address disparities, ways to catch the disease early, and highlight available resources. The Take on Alzheimer’s event is scheduled for Thursday, June 20 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Fourth District Seniors Resource Center, 570 S. 65th Street (off Skyline Drive). Doors will open at 9 a.m. for a complimentary breakfast and an opportunity to connect with local resources.

Take on Alzheimer’s is a campaign by CDPH aimed at sharing brain health tips, learning the early signs of Alzheimer’s, and understanding how to get a diagnosis. According to CDPH, Alzheimer's is the second leading cause of death in California. In San Diego County alone, Alzheimer's and related dementias affect an estimated 98,610 residents aged 55 and older as per data from 2020.

More information about local resources is available from County Aging & Independence Services.
