San Diego County News Center announced that county shelters are waiving adoption and microchip fees through July 7 as part of the "Stars, Stripes and Snuggles" promotion. This initiative, which began on June 16, aims to give pets a new life and address the annual increase in animals entering shelters around the Fourth of July due to fireworks.

The Department of Animal Services has highlighted that county shelters, along with many others across the United States, are currently experiencing overcrowding. Community support is urgently needed to alleviate this situation and help homeless pets find new homes.

For residents within the county service area, microchips are also available to facilitate the reunion of lost pets with their owners. The department emphasized that no family should be separated because of startling noises from fireworks. Pets in panic mode may run into traffic or get lost; hence, it is crucial for them to wear collars with identifying information. Microchipped pets can be reunited more quickly once scanned.

The department advises pet owners to bring their animals inside into quiet, secure rooms during fireworks displays. White noise machines, televisions, or radios can serve as helpful distractions from outside noise. For pets particularly distressed by loud noises, staying home or having someone they like stay with them can provide comfort. Veterinarians might suggest anxiety-relieving medication for especially terrified pets.

Potential adopters can browse online animal listings on the County shelters' Adoptions page where cats, dogs, bunnies, a tortoise, a guinea pig, fowl, and pigs are available for adoption. Due to high demand during this special promotion period, staff recommend selecting a second and third choice in case the first choice has already been adopted.

Adoption fees are always waived for senior adopters and senior pets or those that have been waiting for their forever home for 30 days or more. Walk-in hours at both South Shelter (5821 Sweetwater Road in Bonita) and North Shelter (2481 Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad) are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. However, shelters will be closed on June 19 for Juneteenth holiday observance.
