California is located in a tsunami zone, where seismic events could potentially generate tsunami waves off its coast. While the likelihood of such an event is lower compared to other regions, the threat remains, making preparedness crucial.

Seismic activities can impact distant locations. For instance, on January 15, 2022, a volcanic eruption at Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai in the southwest Pacific Ocean triggered a tsunami affecting multiple harbors. San Diego County experienced a maximum wave height of 0.60 inches, while Arena Cove in Mendocino County recorded 2.14 inches. Such tsunamis can damage harbors and vessels.

Preparedness extends beyond local concerns; knowing what to do during a tsunami abroad can be lifesaving. In San Diego County, residents are encouraged to register with AlertSanDiego for notifications and familiarize themselves with tsunami signs and safety measures.

Education plays a vital role in saving lives. A notable example is Tilly Smith, a British girl who recognized warning signs of an impending tsunami while vacationing in Phuket, Thailand in December 2004. Her timely alert helped save lives on that beach.

The state Office of Emergency Services collaborates with entities like the California Geological Survey and AECOM Technical Services to create detailed tsunami maps for all coastal counties in California. These maps are accessible via the California Department of Conservation website and AlertSanDiego.org also hosts maps for ten coastal cities.

For more information about tsunamis and preparedness strategies, visit The TsunamiZone website and discuss these plans with family and colleagues.
